The rear tail might be the smallest wing on your foil, but it has a big influence on how the whole system feels.
It affects stability, pitch control, turning response, release, glide and how freely the foil moves underneath you. Changing the tail can make the same front wing feel completely different on the water.
At F4, we offer three tail families designed around the three ways many of us spend our time on foil: Winging, Downwind and Surf.
All three are available in S and XS fuselage lengths, giving you an overall fuselage length of approximately 65 cm or 62.5 cm. Within each discipline, different tail sizes allow you to fine-tune the balance between stability, control, speed and maneuverability.
So, where do you start?
Start With How You Ride
The easiest way to choose a tail is to start with the discipline.
- Winging: more stability, control and predictable handling
- Downwind: efficiency, speed, glide and a looser feel
- Surf: maneuverability, carving and quick response
From there, the size of the tail lets you fine-tune the setup.
As a general rule, a larger tail provides more stability and pitch control, while a smaller tail reduces drag and allows the foil to feel more free and responsive.
But size isn't the whole story. The profile of the tail also matters.
Winging Tails — Control Without Giving Up Performance
Our Winging tails are designed for riders who want a balanced, predictable foil that still has plenty of performance.
They are available in:
150 / 170 / 190
The larger 190 tail provides the most stability and pitch control of the three. It is a good choice for riders who value a predictable platform, are riding larger front wings, or simply want a foil that feels easy to manage across a wide range of conditions.
Moving to the 170 gives you a more balanced setup, with a little less drag and a more responsive feel.
The 150 is the choice when you want the foil to feel freer and more reactive while still retaining the characteristics of the Winging tail profile.
For riders who spend most of their time winging, these three sizes provide a straightforward way to tune the feel of the foil without changing the rest of the system.
Winging tail sizes:
- 190 — maximum stability and pitch control
- 170 — balanced performance and control
- 150 — more responsive and freer feeling
Downwind Tails — Less Drag, More Freedom
Downwind foiling puts a premium on efficiency.
Once you're on foil, every bit of drag matters. You want the foil to accelerate easily, maintain speed through the bumps and remain efficient while pumping and connecting sections of open water.
Our Downwind tails are designed specifically around those demands.
Available in:
100 / 110 / 125 / 135
The Downwind tails use a faster, more efficient and significantly looser profile than the standard Winging and Surf tails.
The larger 135 provides more support and control while retaining the characteristics of the Downwind profile. Moving through 125 and 110 progressively reduces the amount of tail area, making the foil feel more responsive and less restricted.
The 100 is the smallest and most minimal option in the range, intended for riders who are comfortable with a very loose, highly responsive foil and want to minimize drag as much as possible.
Downwind tail sizes:
- 135 — more support with a highly efficient profile
- 125 — balanced downwind performance
- 110 — smaller, faster and more responsive
- 100 — minimum drag and maximum freedom
Downwind tails can also be a great option for experienced riders in other disciplines who prefer a looser, faster-feeling foil.
Surf Tails — Two Ways to Tune Your Ride
Surfing is where things get particularly interesting.
A surf foil needs to turn. It needs to roll quickly, release cleanly and respond immediately when you move your weight. But not every surf rider wants exactly the same feel.
That's why F4 offers two different Surf tail profiles.
Standard Surf Profile
The first option uses the same profile as our Winging tails.
Available in:
160 / 137 / 120
These tails provide the familiar balance of control and maneuverability associated with the Winging profile, but in sizes specifically suited to surf foiling.
The 160 gives you more support and stability, while the 137 provides a more balanced surf setup. The 120 reduces tail area for a more responsive and maneuverable foil.
This is a great place to start if you want a surf foil that remains predictable and controlled while still allowing you to carve and maneuver.
Downwind-Profile Surf Tails
The second option is where experienced riders can really tune the character of their foil.
Available in:
138 / 121
These tails have essentially the same shape and surface area as the 137 and 120 Surf tails, but use the faster, much looser profile of our Downwind tails.
That means you can maintain approximately the same tail area while changing the way the tail works through the water.
The result is a freer, faster and more responsive foil with less of the locked-in feeling associated with a more conventional tail profile.
Think of it this way:
137 → 138
Similar size and surface area, but the 138 uses the faster Downwind profile.
120 → 121
Similar size and surface area, but the 121 uses the faster Downwind profile.
This gives experienced surf riders another way to tune their foil without simply going to a smaller tail.
S or XS — Shorter Fuselage, Faster Response
Once you've chosen your tail family and size, you can also choose between the S and XS fuselage lengths.
The two options give an overall fuselage length of approximately:
S — 65 cm
XS — 62.5 cm
The shorter XS setup reduces the distance between the front and rear wings, making the foil feel more immediate and agile.
It can be particularly interesting for riders who want faster pitch response and a more maneuverable foil.
The S length provides a little more room between the wings and a more measured response.
Neither is simply “better.” They are different ways of tuning the same foil system to suit the rider and the way they want the foil to behave.
How Do You Choose?
If you want to keep it simple, start here:
For Winging
Choose 190, 170 or 150 depending on how much stability and control you want.
190 → maximum support
170 → balanced
150 → more responsive
For Downwind
Choose 135, 125, 110 or 100 depending on how much tail area and control you want.
135 → more support
125 → balanced
110 → faster and looser
100 → minimum drag and maximum freedom
For Surf
Start with 160, 137 or 120 if you want the standard Surf profile.
Or choose 138 or 121 if you want the same approximate tail size as the 137 or 120, but with the faster and much looser Downwind profile.
160 / 137 / 120 → controlled, predictable surf profile
138 / 121 → same general size, but faster and looser
Then choose between the 65 cm S and 62.5 cm XS fuselage to further tune the response.
There Isn't One “Right” Tail
The right tail isn't necessarily the biggest, smallest, fastest or most stable one.
It's the one that matches how you ride and how you want your foil to feel.
If you're learning or looking for maximum control, more tail area can make the foil easier to manage. As your riding progresses, reducing tail area or moving to a faster profile can give you a more responsive and unrestricted feeling.
And if you're an experienced rider, don't be afraid to experiment. A change in tail can completely change the personality of a familiar front wing.
That's part of what makes foiling so much fun.
