Foil Tuning, Surface Preparation & Performance
One of the most common questions we receive is whether surface preparation and foil tuning can improve performance.
The short answer is: yes.
At the highest levels of racing, riders spend considerable time optimizing their equipment by eliminating vibrations, reducing unwanted noise, refining trailing edges, and improving surface finishes. Small details can have a noticeable impact on glide, efficiency, and overall ride feel.
To help explain some of these techniques, we've included a couple of excellent videos from Bruce Peterson of Sailworks, one of the most respected figures in wind and foil sports. Bruce does a great job demonstrating how experienced racers approach foil preparation and what they look for when optimizing performance.
While these techniques are commonly used by professional and competitive riders, it is important to understand that they involve modifying the original surface and geometry of the foil.
